Opening Day on the Chesapeake Bay
It’s opening day on the Chesapeake Bay for the spring striped bass season. Dan Betz chartered the 48-foot Loosen-Up (301-261-5869) out of Happy Harbor in Deale, Maryland.
This is my fourth year taking the Loosen-Up out on opening day. This afternoon’s four-hour cruise landed us 17 striped bass between 10 persons, with seven going back into the water. All of the fish were between 30 and 42-inches long.
Leaving from Rockhold Creek in Deale, we motored out of Herring Bay, across the Chesapeake, north of the Old Gas Buoy and closer to the eastern shore side of the Bay. We primarily fished from south of Bloody Point (Kent Island) and more or less along Poplar Island.
Each fisherman is allowed one keeper fish as long as its 28-inches or larger. We drew cards to establish the order, and little did we know that we would have a fishing bonanza, catching 17 legal-sized fish, often in doubles, and with seven going back to the water.
Dan took the second largest fish on the day, landing a 39-incher.
Clint Weaver wrestled two fish on the afternoon.
Father and son, Ben and Clint show-off this weekend’s bounty from the Bay.
Ben tussles with his fish . . .
. . . and so does Jim.
Jim, the wrangler, works his fish to the boat.
I think he’s planning a menu of Uncle Ben’s wild rice with bass filets.
Fish on! What a fighter, this cow took the bait at what seemed like 50-yards out from the boat . . .
. . . but well worth it. A 42-inch citation striped bass! Registering on-line, my fish is now entered into the Maryland Fishing Challenge, Grand Finale, with a chance to win prizes from MD DNR on September 10.
A twofer, with Jay Demig and Dan reeling in spring Rockies.
An absolutely beautiful day on the water.
Thank you to the Carver’s, and mates Kathy and Chris for getting us on fish and working the rods.
Way to go Ben.
Jim is working the fish to the boat.
After a flurry of fish to finish-off the afternoon, we motored back to Rockhold Creek. An osprey does a fly-by to remind us that we are not the only ones who had a great day of fishing.
Chris and Kathy show-off our citation lunker as the outdoor bar claps for our success.
Thank you Dan for organizing a great outing!
